In 1909, artist Pamela Coleman Smith, under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite, created an innovative 78-card tarot deck that would come to be recognized as revolutionary. With descriptive pictures on the 56 Minor Arcana cards, the Rider-Waite deck digressed from the tradition of tarot deck used for centuries and set the standard for nearly every tarot deck published.

 

A Brief Run About The Tarot

The modern tarot deck has been traced back to 15th-century Italy and a game called "triumphs" The traditional tarot deck consists of two sets of cards, one having 22 pictures (the .major arcana), such as the Fool, the Magician, the High Priestess, etc. The other set (the minor arcana) has 56 cards with kings, queens, knights, and knaves of wands or batons, coins or pentacles, swords and cups. The names may vary for the suits but the general meanings are still the same.
